10 hours a week

I have tried to write this blog post a couple times in different formats, instead I will keep it short and more personal, rather than speaking for a general audience. For those unaware, I currently live in SF but work in the Peninsula. The commute is on average 60-70m one way (around 10-11 hours a week). I've spent so long on this daily commute that I have thought deeply about time wasted rather than enjoyment gained from living in this city. I gained some passive hobbies while commuting: I...

Seoul

In late February, a friend posted a flight deal on Facebook. It was only $500 roundtrip from SFO (San Francisco) to ICN (Seoul), with certain arrival/departing dates. For those unfamiliar, these flights are usually in the 800-900s from the west coast. My boyfriend and I were planning on eventually doing an East Asia trip (HK, Taiwan, Korea, Japan) later in the year, but this chance came up, and we went for it! Sights We only had about 5 days in the city, so we didn’t have time to go to Bu...

Unofficial High Fitness Standards of California

I live in an extremely fit neighborhood (Nob Hill, bordering Russian Hill). Walking up my street on a typical weekend morning, probably 50% of people look like they just came from or are going to a yoga studio or gym, or they are in the middle of a run or walk with their dog. People are really fit here! I suppose it’s the nice weather that really encourages everyone to go outdoors. I know that if it was cold or rainy, I’d definitely be discouraged to go out. So I am not the most athletic per...

Back in the Bay: Finding a Place

This past month being here has been crazy busy. I’ve been juggling between moving to my new apartment as well as the somewhat stressful team decision making over at work (more on that in a separate blog post). For those who are not aware, finding a reasonably priced place to live in the Bay Area is pretty difficult. You can end up paying $1200/month for a converted living room (not ideal for someone that wants privacy), which is considered "cheap"; or you can pay $3000-$4000/month for a 1 b...

About Me, Version 2

Recently, a high school acquaintance of mine passed away in a motorcycle accident. I had a few classes with him in high school but I didn’t know him too well to make a post. I saw a lot of my high school friends posting on his Facebook wall about the good times, how amazing he was as a person, or old photos of him popping up on my feed. It’s strange how that event brought a number of my high school acquaintances and friends together (or at least the illusion of it). I guess Facebook is good a...
